2006/07 CAL CHAIRMAN REPORT FROM MATCHES 1 TO 12

2006/07 CAL CHAIRMAN REPORT FROM MATCHES 1 TO 12

1. This report details the statistics/data from CAL Matches 1 to 7 in the 2006/07 Coarse Season. There is no report from CAL 4 (19 Jul) as this match was postponed at short notice on the grounds of Health & Safety (Duty of Care) as temperatures were forecasted to peak as high as 34F. The Match Secretary is re-arranging this match at Child Beale for later in the season. A total of 42 anglers had participated in the league to date, comprising 35 servicemen and 7 civilians.

CAL 1 – Oakfields Fishery [view results]

Expectations were high at this venue, as good weights had been recorded on the lake fished on the weekend before. Typically on the day it did not produce for the 30 CAL anglers and although Carp were caught, most catches were made up with small Roach. Winner of an end peg by a clear 4 lbs was Steve Perham with 25-2-8.

CAL 2 - Alders Farm [view results]

28 anglers enjoyed good weather with Carp on a feeding frenzy off every peg. Over 950lb of fish were weighed in and Steve Perham sussed out the fastest method first and nearly doubled the weight of the 2nd angler, with a 141-2-0 catch of carp up to low doubles. I believe this to be a new CAL, 5 hour record weight?

CAL 3 – Bowsaw Lakes [view results]

26 anglers fished these 2 lakes with the standard one section on the top lake and two sections on the bottom lake. 300 lb of mainly carp were caught with Rob Jones winning the match with 45-3-0 from the bottom lake. All the better weights did come from the bottom lake. Top weight and 3rd in match from the top lake was Mr Haines with 24-2-0

CAL 4 - Gold Valley Lakes [view results]

26 Anglers took part in this re-scheduled fixture. With expectations high, the venue did not disappoint and fished well in all sections. Mr Steve Bettis taking the honours with 105 lbs of Carp taken on Pellet, Wg Cdr Andy Johnson finished in 2nd place with 90 lbs 9oz. Overall, a massive 1,075 lbs of fish were taken to the scales.

CAL 5 – Brimlade (Kennet & Avon Canal) [view results]

This match would give an idea for those participating in the RAF Championships a month later. 13 anglers and the poorest turnout to date attended this event. All anglers caught bits and Steve Wildman was a comfortable winner with a weight of
6-2-0.

CAL 6 – Medley (R. Thames) [view results]

22 fished a clear and slow moving river at Medley. Pete Neal won a close contest with 10-13-8 and all but one angler took fish to the scales.

CAL 7 – Broughton (Canal) [view results]

21 anglers attended with the majority recording 3lb plus weights. Steve Bettis made the most of 2 blank pegs beside him to weigh in an impressive Bream haul of 45-13-0. Ian Stevens on the next peg was on the edge of the Bream shoal and came 2nd with 18lb dead.

CAL 8 – Benson (R Thames) [view results]

25 Anglers turned up only to find the river not at its best. Whilst all anglers caught fish, it was Cpl Steve Perham who made the best of it on the day, absolutely annihilating all around him with 15 lb 6oz of pole caught Roach & Perch. WO Chris Eden took full advantage of blank pegs either side to place 10 lb 6oz on the scales to take 2nd place.

CAL 9 - Tingrith Lakes [view results]

25 Anglers turned out on a wind affected and “peggy” venue, suffering from very low water levels and consequently, this match did not really live up to expectations. The match was won with a last cast 20 lb+ Carp by CT Chris Hill who weighed 21 lb 8oz; second place went to Cpl Steve Perham who managed to coax a 4-5lb Tench to boost his weight to 12 lb 9oz. Despite some quite hard sections, only 1 novice angler failed to “weigh-in”.

CAL CUP – Tunnel Barn Farm

23 Anglers enjoyed some cracking sport with over 660lb of fish caught and all but 2 recorded double figure weights. Steve (give me your money) Perham easily won the match with 95-6-0, which was 30lb clear of 2nd placed Steve Bettis.

CAL 10 - Broughton (Canal) [view results]

For the second time this season, Mr Steve Bettis won the match at Broughton. On a very even venue, only a few bonus fish showed on the day to make the difference in weights. Steve caught mostly Skimmers to finish with a weight of 9lb 7 ½ oz from Mr Tony Chapman in 2nd place with 7lb 11 oz. Although some sections proved to be hard work, no dry nets were recorded amongst the 21 Anglers taking part.

CAL 11 – Bowsaw Lakes [view results]

22 Anglers braved freezing conditions to attend this popular venue. The ‘All-in’ was delayed by half an hour to allow for breaking the ice but this proved not to affect the sport as temperatures warmed up throughout the day. Carp & Skimmers made up the bulk of Sgt Murray Parkin’s winning bag of 31 lbs from the top lake, whilst Mr Steve Bettis caught Carp & Goldfish from the bottom lake to take 2nd place with 29 ½ lbs.

CAL 12 - Culham (R Thames)
. [view results]

Following a period of torrential rain, the river at Dorchester was deemed un-fishable and subsequently, this match was switched to the navigation channel above Culham lock. 21 Anglers braved the elements and howling gales; unfortunately, 10 wished they hadn’t and beaten by the conditions recorded the season’s worst dry net count. With only a handful of fish caught, JT Johnstone won the day with a hard-earned 3 lb 10oz, closely followed by CT Steve Wildman who somehow managed to snare a 2 lb Perch to help him into second place with 3 lb 4oz.

MOB Challenge Match RAF Benson v RAF Odiham – Longmoor Lake

Most anglers had good catches of net sized Tench and Carp and this year the trophy was eventually re-gained by RAF Benson.

RAF Clubman (Kennet & Avon Canal)

John Hordle, Paul Tindall and Jacko Jackson were selected to participate in this competion held the day before the RAF Championships. Jacko put in a solid performance and was 2nd in the match.
