ROYAL AIR FORCE INTER-LEAGUE CHAMPS 2005

Within the RAF we currently have a very active and competitive angling calendar and due to the varied locations of our units throughout the UK we are segregated into 7 leagues those being,

Chiltern Angling League (CAL)
East Anglian Wednesday League (EAWL)
East Midlands Angling League (EMAL)
Scottish Coarse Angling League (SCAL)
South West Angling League (SWAL)
Vale of York League (VOYL)
West Midland Angling League (WMAL)

Each league has an active match calendar and once a year 10 anglers are selected by the individual league’s committee to represent their league in the RAF Inter-League Championships. This year’s event was held on the River Trent at Burton Joyce.

On the day there was hardly any flow and the water was very clear not ideal for Trent fishing. Due to the nature of our environment two leagues where unable to field a team and another came with only six anglers so we only managed to get a total of 53 anglers on the Bank.

The results reflected a very difficult match for most as the results show. However showing his true class the current RAF Squad captain Gordon Bell EAWL took top spot with17lb 11oz fishing the waggler on peg 252 roadside to finish well clear of those around him, 2nd was Al Dyer EMAL with 13lb 13oz again fishing the waggler from peg 15 at Gunthorpe bridge and 3rd was Gary Lavis fishing the feeder for Barbel on peg 214 nelson’s field the method came good for Gary and it saw him take a 10lb 3oz fish giving a total weight of 10lb 8oz.

On the team front the EMAL team where looking to keep hold of the trophy they had won the previous year at Staunton Harold reservoir. With the best 8 from 10 to count it proved to be a close affair with EMAL taking it with 12 points to EAWL’S 17 and CAL’S 18.

With this the second major event in the RAF’s match calendar completed all thoughts turned to the RAF’s premier team and individual event, the RAF Championships to be held on the Grand Union Canal at Aylesbury in October which normally sees 150 anglers turning out to fish. Following on from the NFA Div 1 and the poor form that this showed it looks as though we have found ourselves another hard venue to fish.
