RAF Coarse Angling Inter Unit Championships 2008

On Monday 21 Jul 08 RAF Coarse Angling Inter Unit Championships took place at Boddington reservoir near Daventry with over 100 anglers attending. The main methods required were to be the pellet wag, pellet bomb or pellet method feeder.

Expectations where extremely high as the event was a sell out one month before the event as rumours of huge weights were circulating around, and because the venue is stuffed to the rafters with ravenous shoals of carp in the 4-6lb bracket! Which where rumoured to fight like……..Ghurkhas. However they do have a liking for rods and reels in this 68 acre waterway as one or two of our brethren will tell you, last seen at peg 55 a Garbolino Mayhem wag rod and Baitrunner reel worth over £150…. I hear there is a reward waiting up at Digby…..

As always with big RAFCAA matches the curse seems to hit and it literally did to the pub where the draw was scheduled for, the landlady was rudely awakened at 4 in the morning with a crash, bang and wallop! A young man decided to park his car in her bar and rearrange her décor downstairs whilst travelling at about 80 MPH. The bar staff where troopers though, serving up over 75 full English breakfasts in no time at all.

The weather wasn’t the best either, it is not often one can see 1ft rollers on an inland waterway, which made feeding and casting the required distance very hard indeed.

On the individual front CT Graham Welton RAF Waddington hauled in an impressive 141lbs 7ozs from peg 90. Graham caught well all day mainly on the Pellet Waggler.
In a practice session, a week earlier Graham had been trying to improve his waterskiing skills whilst fishing the long pole and landing a whopper of 13lbs. Not content with taking the individual title Graham also won a large crystal tankard for winning C section. Well done Graham, I know this is not the first time he has had his name on the individual trophy nor will it be the last.

Sgt Gav Akinson RAF Leeming weighed in 125lbs 9ozs for second from peg 99 on the pellet wag at 30m feeding 8.5mm pellets when the wind died down enough to be able to do it accurately .…Well done buddy, massive result to say you got all the gen from big john the day before!

The new RAFCAA (coarse) Chairman, Welsh International Wg Cdr Andy Johnstone from High Wycombe bagged third spot with 108lbs 8oz and picked up a fine brace of crystal glasses along with the silver wear as he won B section as well, however you would have thought that as an Officer in Her Majesties Royal Air Force he would have learnt to count!

On the Team front Old Lags White and RAF Digby tied for first place on 11 pts but as the Old Lags cant qualify for Silver wear or crystal the main spoils went to Digby trio of, Gp Capt Sean Corbett, Sgt John Summerson and Cpl Baggy Allen. Gp Capt Corbett came third in the very hard A section with 40lbs 13ozs, John managed to sneak in a couple of extra fish late on to pip those around him and achieve second in B Section with 72lbs, and Cpl Baggy Allen was at the right end of C section to achieve a final place of Sixth in section with 68lb 8oz…..All of those who beat Baggy finished in the top 5 of the match! It must have been solid.

RAF Cosford ‘A’ team were second on the day out of the RAF Units, Sgt Nige Clark led the team brilliantly finishing individually in 5th Place, and RAF Odiham got the final pieces of silver and crystal for third in the 2008 Inter Unit Championships.

Old Lags ‘White’ were the top OL’s team and Noel Whitwham was top OL individually with a weight of 84lbs 8ozs.
