RAFCAA Team Manager's Update - Jun 2006

RAFCAA (COARSE) TEAM MANAGER’S UPDATE TO THE RAFCAA (COARSE) ANGLING SUB- COMMITTEE. REPORT PERIOD 11 FEB 06 – 19 JUN 06

Following a fairly successful season last year, the new squad have wasted no time in getting down to some serious business with a Team 1st and 2nd in Holland and a recent victory at the InterServices.

To ensure the continued success of the RAF Squad, emphasis should be placed on League Chairmen to actively encourage their league members, particularly their younger anglers to submit their results to the RAF Squad Selection Committee for consideration.

The first Squad meeting proved to be a great success with 16 anglers participating. Despite an out of sort River Ancholme not producing the goods, a valuable day was had with Dusty Kiddell just pipping Sean Corbett to take top honours with lb of roach.

Overseas Challenge - Apr 06.

Despite the Navy pulling out of the event, no further problems were encountered in the organisation of the event. Unfortunately, it seemed we spoke too soon and arrived in Holland to find most of it under water due to an extremely flooded and un-fishable River Ijssel. By default, a new lake was found which turned out to be a very well kept secret. Practice sessions produced an average of 50lb per man of perfect roach. Keen to dominate the event right from the start, both RAF Red and Blue got off to a flying start. It was day 2 however that would subsequently be the turning point of the whole event where RAF Red had 4 section wins and 2 section seconds for a staggering record equalling 40 points (RAF Old Lags have previously matched this). From that day, the team never looked back finishing the event 30 points clear of RAF Red with 193 points, the highest Team score in the history of the event. Finishing with 163 Points, RAF Blue finished just in front of the Old lags with 159 points. RAF Gold finished 5th with 138 points. Individual honours went to Flt Lt Richie Tomala who took 3 section wins and a section 2nd to end the event with 36 points and become the only angler to win the event twice. Second spot went to Sgt Gordon Bell who certainly made up for his disappointment last year finishing on 34 points. Overall, RAF Red had 5 of its 6 anglers finish in the top 6 with the RAF as a whole having 7 anglers in the top10.

Inter-Services – Jun 06.

Following the successful start to the season and still hurting from our defeat last year, the Squad were determined to make no mistakes at this years event held at Larford Lakes on 8 Jun 06. Despite the exhausting heat wave the whole team pulled together produce an effective plan that centred around either method feeder or up in the water tactics. On the day, this approach seemed to be right as both the RAF and Navy caught from the off with the Army left asking questions as they failed to make their paste approach work. Despite initial fears that it would be a close result between the Navy, and us the RAF won the event convincingly taking 8 out of 12 section wins. Individual honours went to Cpl Steve Perham who recorded the 2nd highest weigh ton the venue finishing with a brilliant 166lb of up in the water carp. Second spot went to a very consistent Sgt Steve Hutter.

Future Events

Division 1 National.

Following our resent success, the squad will be hoping for a good result at this years major civilian competition that will be held on the Erewash Canal on 12 Aug 06. Due to a decline in NFA membership, the squad will this year consist of just 10 anglers.

Eurochallenge 2006.

The RAF will send a team of 8 anglers to participate in this event to be held at the start of Sep in Belgium. Unlike past events, this competition will be held on a European commercial fishery where carp and bream will be the target.

Sponsorship

Following the withdrawal of UK distribution of Trabucco goods from Tek-Neek, we are actively seeking a new sponsor. We are awaiting a reply from Masterline UK, the new Trabucco distributors.
