West Midlands Angling League Chairman's Report 2003/04

WMAL Report 2003/04

1. Statistics. The League was represented by 4 of its 5 member units (Valley being the exception) and in total 28 anglers competed. The average attendance for a League Match was 14 with a minimum figure of 9 and a maximum of 17. Of the anglers who fished league matches 19 were Servicemen.

2. League Report. The League was fished over a series of 12 matches, most of these matches being fished on commercial waters, however to maintain a good balance of angling skills the Leagues fixture list also included matches on the Shropshire Union Canal. For the matches held on ‘carp’ lakes the average weight per angler over the year was well into double figures although this figure dropped on the natural waters. The team event was won by RAF Sealand with RAF Cosford as runners up. Unfortunately both Stafford and Shawbury could not always field a full team throughout the season. Individually the league was won by Sgt Tony Randall of RAF Sealand with Mr Mick Ellis also of Sealand finishing as runner-up.

3. League Appointments.

Chairman. WO Green
Treasurer FS Blair
Sec/Match Sec Sgt Randall
Cosford Rep Cpl Clark
Sealand Rep Mr Whiteside
Stafford Rep Mr Crofts
Shawbury Rep Sgt Tetlow

4. The Way Ahead. An encouraging sign this season was a gradual increase in attendance figures with several new faces on the bank. As long as this commitment lasts the League should continue to prosper.
RAF Cosford currently runs a ‘Freshers Fair’ 3 or 4 times a year, it is an opportunity for WMAL to capture the interest of new entrants to the RAF and identify those trainees who are already anglers or would like to take up the sport. Unfortunately, due to the training requirements, it is impossible to engage these individuals in the competitive angling scene at Cosford however we hope to encourage interest through some evening and weekend events. During one of these sessions we made contact with AC Beasley, who had just won the Wychavon Championships during the Evesham Festival. He should be one for the future. Finally, RAF Cosford on behalf of the RAFCAA, were able to present the Albrighton Moat Project with last years Charity contribution.
